The festival of La Mercè, patron saint of Barcelona, is celebrated every year around September 24 in the squares and streets throughout the city. The festival pays tribute to the patron saint of Barcelona.
Every year, the posters for the city’s most anticipated festivals generate great expectations because they allow us to discover works by creators linked to Barcelona. And part of our job is to keep this image alive. This is why we reuse the banners, giving them a second life in the form of bags and accessories, which become unique pieces of the city’s history.
The theme for Mercè 2023 was Las Fiestas, with a tribute to the cultural wealth and diversity of the city’s artists. The posters capture all the moments that the festivities go through, such as dancing, laughter, tradition, music, arts, meeting spaces and the collective brilliance of an open city.
The artist Chamo San was in charge of the posters for this celebration. Chamo San, a cartoonist, illustrator and artist from Barcelona, studied Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
His personal work focuses on the artistic field of drawing and illustration. Without ruling out experimentation with other techniques, such as photography or installation.
Among the relevant characters that can be found on the poster are the writer Maria Mercè Marçal, the actress Margarita Xirgu, the painter Ramon Casas, the writer Teresa Pàmies, the artist Ocaña, among others. Up to 120 characters can be found in Chamo San’s work.
